university, prides herself on her intelligence. Although her older sister, Tatami, is a top student in the sixth grade at the Cherry-Stone Elementary School, Asari herself is a rather mediocre fourth grader. Today Asari is off to the supermarket which is offering a big spring bargain sale. Asari is hoping to draw a lucky lottery ticket; and, indeed, she manages to get the top prize of a trip to Hawaii. However, with the ticket being for one person only, a great commotion is aroused within the Beach household. A battle begins within the family for possession of the ticket. While Asari dreams of a pleasant vacation, she must face day and night her sister picking on her, her mother's constant entreatment, and her father's sermons. Nevertheless, Asari manages to repulse them with a desperate defense strategy. But then when Asari visits the travel agency, she is told that it will not let a child use the ticket alone. She falls into feelings of despair and hopelessness. That evening the delicious aroma of roasted yams flows into the Beach living room along with the smoke produced by burning leaves. Attracted to the smell, Tatarni and Mrs. Beach go into the garden. Next to the bonfire she's built, Asari divides up a roasted potato, and simply asks, "How about it? Doesn't this sweet potato taste of Hawaii?" Mrs. Beach and Tatami are startled. They try to take the travel pass out of the fire, but it is too late. The pass has already turned to ashes. Thereupon, the voice of an employee of the supermarket can suddenly be heard saying, "Miss and Mrs. Beach, the travel agency says it'll give you the equivalent of half of the travel expenses in cash in exchange for the ticket."So what will happen to Asari, Tatami, and their mother? Another commotion seems ready to hit the Beach family.
