In a lake virtually hidden deep in the high mountains along the French and Swiss border lies a tiny island.This island contains Lil Little, the smallest village in the world. Its residents originally came from outer space, and they tend to be around 16 centimeters tall. They prefer to live apart from human beings, and the villagers even practice everyday feigning dead just in case they should meet up with an unknown creature.Memole is the granddaughter of the village chief.Full of curiosity, she can't resist the urge to go beyond the village limits. Attracted to the sounds of a piano, Memole ends up at Mariel's mountain lodge.Although Memole had heard humans are awful monsters, she can't believe that of the beautiful and gentle-looking Mariel.Eventually Memole comes to know Mariel and to learn that, of poor health, she has been half abandoned by her parents and is being exploited by her governess, Miss Penelope. Memole starts visiting Mariel regularly, and teaches her how to enjoy herself outdoors when Miss Penelope isn't looking.
